FLOPPY HATS

It is currently warmer weather season and I am stoked. This means we have plenty of sunny days to look forward to. I love wearing floppy hats during the summer, especially on the beach! Today, I want to share with you two DIY embellished hats that I made for myself.

Since I am going to Miami and the Bahamas soon, I created one of those floppy hats with cute phrases stitched on them! I’m sure you’ve seen this trend on plenty of fashion bloggers this year. These hats can often be a little pricey as I’ve seen them being sold by retailers for about $100! However, I made my embellished hat for only $20. Also, my project does not require stitching, which means no painful labor work to worry about! First and foremost, buy a plain floppy straw hat. I got my hat on Amazon Prime for only $15. You can also find affordable ones from Target, Old Navy and Forever 21! See the additional steps below.

Materials:

  • Floppy straw hat
  • High temperature glue gun
  • Black sequin trim
  • Black tasseled trim (or any other decorative trims of your choice!)
  • Pencil or marker

Directions:

  1. Think of a phrase that you would want on your hat. For my hat, I wanted it to say “sunkissed.” Examples of other cute and funny phrases you could use are: Aloha Beaches, Beach Please, Out of Office, Beach hair don’t care, Only good vibes, etc.
  2. Once you pick a phrase, write it (in cursive) onto your hat.
    .
    .
  3. This phrase that you wrote down in cursive will be used as a guide when you’re gluing down your black sequin trim. So turn on your glue gun and let it heat up a little.
  4. Start gluing your sequin trim by tracing along the written phrase.
    .
    .
  5. Next, glue any other decorative trim along the round brim of your hat. I picked out a tasseled black trim. I think this additional detail makes this hat extra pretty!
  6. Lastly, let the hat sit for the hot glue to dry.

For my second project, I made a floral embellished hat because I am attending a Kentucky Derby party this weekend! If you are attending a Kentucky Derby themed party as well…or even the event itself, I am hoping this DIY tutorial will help inspire you to make a hat too! As you know, those real fancy hats for Kentucky Derby are soooo expensive! I was able to inexpensively make my hat for about $25! Awesome, right?! Again, buy a plain floppy straw hat. I got my second hat from Amazon Prime as well.

Materials:

  • Floppy straw hat
  • High temperature glue gun
  • Fake flowers of your choice – I picked blush pink, light gray, dusty blue and ivory flowers to match my dress. When I bought these flowers, I got them for such a steal!!! Michael’s was having 50% off all flowers. I also had a 50% off one item and 20% off your entire purchase, which I was luckily able to use both coupons at once!
  • Fake greens – I chose green branches to break up the pile of flowers
  • Tulle – I chose white tulle to tie a bow around the brim of my hat
  • Floral wire
  • Heavy duty floral scissors

Directions:

  1. Cut a long piece of tulle, tie it around the brim of the hat and make a bow.
    .
    .
  2. Take scissors and cut off branches of greenery. Using floral wire, wrap around the green branches against the knot core of the bow so it stays in place. Then use hot glue gun to add glue on the middle knot area so it definitely does stay in place! Next, glue some spots on the tulle that is around the brim so the tulle doesn’t move around and is secured to the hat. You can see what I did in my picture below!
    .
    .
  3. Measuring 3 inches down the stem, cut it off so you have floral tops to embellish your hat. You want to have a couple of inches of stem so you can attach these flowers to your hat.
  4. Once you finish cutting off your flower tops, arrange them (as to how you want it) on top of the knot core of your bow. Add hot glue as much as possible in the center so that the floral arrangements stay!
  5. Lastly, let the hat sit for the hot glue to dry.

As you can see, making these embellished hats can be quite easy and inexpensive. FYI – This floral Kentucky Derby hat doesn’t have to just be worn once for this upcoming weekend. You can even wear it on other summer days as well! Enjoy!
